When a huge oil reserve was discovered at Spindletop, in southeast Texas, in 1901, the state was an inward-looking �hell with cows� built around lumber, cotton, and cattle. In this riveting history, Burrough charts the decades-long rush that made Texas oil into a political and economic powerhouse through the lives of the four great barons: Hugh Roy Cullen, Clint Murchison, Sid Richardson, and H. Texas oil power

This is the one best book you can find on how the great oil fortunes of TX were built. This is a monumental work on the subject. I live in TX, and it's truly a tale of history of our state as seen from the oil industry. TX oil fortunes have affected our world on many levels.
Brilliant job, readable, and you won't put it down. I bought a copy just to reread. It's quite a primer on oil power and politics.

I highly recommend it for anyone interested in TX history or business history. A classic work destined to be read for years to come.

ONLY THOSE TEXANS WITH MONEY AND POWER ARE CRAZY

WOW! I started my career with an oil and gas attorney in San Angelo, Texas, in the late 1950s, and have continued my entire career in that world, ending up a landman in Midland, Texas. Embedded in that culture, of course, I knew of the Texas Oil families (I also happen to be an original Kansas City Chiefs' fan), but had no idea of the coziness of these landed gentry (oil acreage)and politicians, influencing national policies for their own benefit to the detriment of others, perhaps the forerunner of today's political mess.

Over the years I did see, from the inside, the manipulations of banks and markets by "oil people" - it wasn't pretty!!!!

At any rate, Bryan Burrough has, almost with photographic skill, written a real-life scenario comparable to any suspenseful mystery writer of today - I could not put the book down, staying up late at night wanting to know how it all worked out.

CAVEAT: NOT ALL TEXANS ARE INSANE - JUST THOSE TO WHOM MONEY/POWER IS/ARE GOD !!!!

HGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

Amazing story of Texas oil

Amazing story of Texas oil, its billionaires, its politics and its history of how we came to be the way we are as Texans on the road to the way we are in 2014. I grew up in the 50's in a sleepy little town 35 miles north of Dallas. My parents were Democrats, my father a self-employed home builder. I heard daily discussions of politics, the government's ineptitude and wasteful policies, how big unions encouraged laziness and less productive workers (GM, AT&T, etc.) and I heard many negative discussions about LBJ and how he "stuffed the ballot boxes". Of course, at the tender age of 7- 16, I didn't know what that meant nor was I concerned with it. Somewhere in the sixties, my parents became (mostly) Republicans. This book was a great read, with lots of footnotes and source references. I learned a lot and understand a lot more about my history as a native Texan!

Excellent Overview for Students of Family Life

This 14th edition of a classic text in family studies provides an excellent look at family styles in the early 21st century. Although the bulk of the book is North American in content and origin, there is useful material here from other cultural perspectives.

Especially helpful is the section on parenting (section 7) which includes a careful study of current trends in adoption. Within the U.S., individual states are changing public policy in ways that benefit families who include non-birth children within their household. Recent U.S. federal policy also encourages this process.

Another useful section reviews "work and family life." (section 9) Here is one of the best sociological studies of the way our current economy impacts family roles, structures, and outcomes. More study is needed here; this is a topic well worth exploring.

Overall, the 14th edition continues to build on an excellent platform that Jerome and Arlene Skolnick have provided and edited.

Good but a difficult read

This book has a collaboration of authors and the writing style varies greatly from one chapter to the next. Some are very difficult to read and can turn an interesting topic into a snooze fest.

Overall it is a very good book that looks at different points of view (i.e., conservative, liberal, feminist). I couldn't rate it that high though because it was difficult to read.

Relevant and timely articles about the "family unit"

I have been out of college for many years now but this text was loaned to me by a Sociology major after we had some interesting discussions about family issues, and despite this being a textbook, it was a pleasant surprise to enjoy reading it.

I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning about the current issues of families in America and all the factors that affect the existence of a family; basically, the evolution of the "family" unit in the United States over the past few decades with a focus on recent years.

Current trends in American family life are discussed in a scholarly manner along with some debunking of popular myths about families. Excellent and for the most part easy-to-read text on the status of today's families, esp. with articles about the impact of class, race, educational level, socio-economic status and our aging population on what defines a family at this time (2008-2009).

Issues such as our longer lifespans are discussed as far as how it potentially means longer years in marriage and time alone together after the children have become independent, but it is also just as likely that couples may have their elderly parents to take care of, and/or adult children returning home due to the recent changes in the economy. The text also discusses the shift in the preferences of men and women away from marriage/family as an economic necessity and instead more about psychological fulfillment and building lifelong relationships within the family.

Changes in technology and a shift towards a service and information economy enable more jobs for women and can even allow for both men and women to work from home and still raise a family if they choose. However the economy has been unstable in recent years so this affects not only the adult children who may not be able to leave home and live independently, but also changes the dynamics within the family if suddenly the wife/mother becomes the primary wage earner and/or the husband/father is unable to find work at the same earning power as before. The text also discusses how over the years society's expectations remain the same for a mother's responsibilities whether she stays home with her children or is also working outside the home full-time, and the so-called "mommy wars."

The topics have been relevant personally so I admit to some bias in favorably reviewing this text because so much of what is discussed seems to accurately reflect real-life situations that I have lived through as well as those heard about via friends and relatives.

One of the Photography Books on my bookshelf

There are a limited number of photography books that I keep near my desk. Brian Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" Scott Kelby's "Whatever is hot this week from Adobe" and now Rick Sammon's Creative Visualization. I grade myself as a solid B photographer - I can make the buttons and dials work like I want, but have trouble making photos with emotion.

So you're aware - I'm a big fan of Rick's work - and have been on a workshop with him so my bias is positive. That said, it's still money and time and it would be easier to avoid writing a review than to post anything at all - disclaimer complete.

This is a book that covers a lot of ground. It's not a "Field Guide" nor is it a camera owner's manual - but I don't know that it's supposed to be either so that's ok by me. I won't comment about the ebook as I have the printed version which is well organized, clear and beautifully presented - both ideas and images.

I first read this book cover-to-cover and there is a lot of material - and it may seem overwhelming at first read. The second time I went back and broke it down into chapters - each chapter conveys specific thoughts, ideas and tutorials. You may not need everything in the book - but it's sure nice to have in case you do - or even as a reminder.

My summary of the book follows:
Part I is about thinking - the what, how and why of photography - basically figuring out a photo before you take it;
Part II is about making the photo better - composition, separation of elements, managing the light, etc.
Part III is about adjusting your images. Here's a discussion I hear a lot "A good photo does not need any post processing." OK - if that's your thing then cool. For me, color correction, cropping and sharpening are important to my photos. Rick does not seem to advocate anything, but just guides us through options that allow us to be more creative - use if you want
Part IV is about advanced concepts (EDR, HDR, B&W) that are neither so advanced as to be complex nor so unusual

In short - the book, to me, could be called "Making Your Photo Look Like You Want It" and I'd be good with that. Unlikely to be a best-seller due to title alone though. As important, Creative Visualization allows me to look at my photos in a new way - and to figure out why I like something or why I do not - which will hopefully make me a better photographer.

Now the bad news - it's going to be very expensive. OK, the book is like $25 but when I saw photos of Wales, Route 66, Iceland, Zion NP, etc. the travel costs are going to be excessive - even by photography standards where everything is expensive.

Here's my advice - buy "Understanding Exposure" to learn about shutter speed and aperture. Buy Creative Visualization to help you become better with the camera in your hands, and in the digital darkroom. Then, go take pictures.

Fire Hose

My profile on a photography web site I regularly visit has a space for "What are you wishing to have?" Most of the other photographers list pieces of equipment they want. My entry is "Vision". A book entitled "Creative Visualization" sounded like it was aimed at me.

By vision I mean the process by which one looks at a photographic subject and mentally projects the finished image one wants, recognizing the camera settings, composition and post processing one might apply to get that finished image. I explain that definition because while Rick Sammon apparently had something similar in mind when he set out to write this book, he never explained this process.

Reading this book was like drinking from a fire hose: information and ideas came too fast and furious to grab onto. That was made even more difficult because the ideas seemed to be sprinkled about in no kind of order. Thus for example in a chapter on seeing the light we are told "props rock", "frame the face" and "direct the subject". These are all important photographic concepts, and it might even be that the ideas can be tied to seeing the light and visualization, but mostly they appear as separate random ideas.

The book is profusely illustrated with the author's photographs, but be warned that if you are turned off by images that are heavily manipulated in post-processing, you may not like these images.

I've always liked Sammon's infectious enthusiasm and optimism and it's here too. On the other hand, the fourth time an aphorism is repeated can become a bit tiring.

There is a section on image processing specialties like high dynamic range photography and panoramas, but unless a person already understood something about these techniques one would be pressed to begin to use them effectively based upon the author's presentations. There is a chapter about something he calls Extended Dynamic Range (EDR) but even after rereading the chapter I didn't understand if he was talking about the application of HDR tools to a single image or processing in Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw or Photoshop to reveal the maximum details in shadow and bright areas. If the latter, that's something photographers have been doing for a long time in post-processing that doesn't require a new set of initials.

This book reads quickly, and the reader might be able to catch hold of a useful idea or two as they whizzed by. Just don't expect an organized approach to the idea of visualization or photography in general.

This book is awesome. I have always liked to take pictures and recently started on a journey to move my picture taking to a higher level. Rick Sammon's book is full of pictures, concepts and processes, which has helped me rethink how I approach my photography. Rick has a teaching style that is easy to follow, concepts that are fun to try, and his before and after photos demonstrate a few simple steps to turn a good shot into a great photo. I believe that there is something of value for all levels of photographers, and I have returned to this book a few times to reinforce some of the concepts and also try new ones. I highly recommend this book and will be purchasing hard copies when they become available to be given as gifts to some of my photography friends
