But the deals that bring these inputs together are inherently problematic: artists have strong views; the muse whispers erratically; and consumer approval remains highly uncertain until all costs have been incurred.

To assemble, distribute, and store creative products, business firms are organized, some employing creative personnel on long-term contracts, others dealing with them as outside contractors; agents emerge as intermediaries, negotiating contracts and matching creative talents with employers. Firms in creative industries are either small-scale pickers that concentrate on the selection and development of new creative talents or large-scale promoters that undertake the packaging and widespread distribution of established creative goods. In some activities, such as the performing arts, creative ventures facing high fixed costs turn to nonprofit firms.

To explain the logic of these arrangements, the author draws on the analytical resources of industrial economics and the theory of contracts. He addresses the winner-take-all character of many creative activities that brings wealth and renown to some artists while dooming others to frustration; why the "option" form of contract is so prevalent; and why even savvy producers get sucked into making "ten-ton turkeys," such as Heaven's Gate. However different their superficial organization and aesthetic properties, whether high or low in cultural ranking, creative industries share the same underlying organizational logic.

Caves is a Harvard professor of political economy and author of a number of books on industrial efficiency, productivity, and competition. He admits to a two-decade fascination with the economics of the artistic and creative endeavor, but Caves worries that others may regard this interest as "frivolous." Consequently, he thought it better to establish his "reputation for professional seriousness" before attempting this analysis. Caves looks at the visual and performing arts, cinema and television, sound recordings, book publishing, and toys and games to investigate how the theory of contracts and the logic of economic organization affect the production of "simple creative goods" and more "complex goods" like plays or motion pictures, which require teams of artists with diverse talents. Under Caves' scrutiny, art collectors and moviegoers are consumers; gallery owners are "gatekeepers"; and critics are "certifiers." Okay for a look-see, but maybe not a great buy, per se.

Upon the suggestion of a very famous academic I purchased this text. This book is written by a famous Harvard economist, and I now know how much these highly esteemed professors can get away with. If you are looking for middle of the road quotes and want a new source for them, this book will easily do the trick. If you are seeking out a illuminating cover to cover text dealing with either Creative Industries or flat out Economics this book may leave you flat.

In all honesty, I did not complete this text and there is a strong likelihood that I never will. This is not to say it is without merits entirely (please note that I did give it 3 stars). It is just that the book very long and lacks an intimate feel of solidarity with either the artistic side or the commerce dealers. It covers a lot of ground, and I do believe that my wallet would have been better served if I had just spent an afternoon at the local University library thumbing the text and xeroxing what I deemed relevant.

The underlying economic principles for many industries

Dozens of books on entertainment industries come out every year, but only few survive the test of time. This is one of them, and not precisely for the encyclopedic amount of information and references it presents (you can actually get many more references by sending an email to the author), or for its practical value --which in my opinion is high. The value of this book boils down to its elegant treatment of the economic logic behind seemingly unrelated businesses like moviemaking or ballet. The chapter on contracts for creative products is truly illuminating.

The author provides upfront the seven basic economic principles that affect all creative industries:

1. Demand is uncertain

2. Creative workers care about their product

3. Some creative products require diverse skills

4. Differentiated products.

5, 6, 7: read them yourself.

While everybody in the entertainment world might have their own list, this one is written and carefully developed by Richard Caves.

The format might be intimidating to some (e.g., no pictures, no tables, no flashy stuff), so don't buy it if you are not willing to invest a little time and brains to profit from the author's reasoning.

A revolution in its time

I started reading James in 1980, like all his early work this book helped spark a revolution in the statistical information available to the general public. Young people don't realize it, but in the 1970s and early 1980s you could not find out what Jim Rice hit at home versus on the road; Mantle's lifetime batting average left-handed versus right-handed; how many times Reggie Jackson walked in a season, let alone intentional walks. How often did Jim Rice hit into a double play (too often, but other than that you could not get the statistics). James changed all that; he forced baseball to release the information, and when they wouldn't cooperate, he organized people to compile it themselves. So whether or not you think stats play too big a role in todays' baseball (I would not disagree) try to imagine a time when you couldn't get information as simple as a lefty/righty or home/road split. I am not exaggerating.

Infertility is no longer a neutral term suggesting an inability to conceive, according to Becker (Disrupted Lives; Healing the Infertile Family), but has become a "disease" to be cured through a strange marriage of medicine, technology and commerce. In this study of the "subjective experience" of using reproductive technologies, based on interviews with more than 300 women and men, she argues that a variety of market and ethical forces conspire to make these treatments look not only deceptively safe and successful, but also morally necessary. Chancy technologies such as in vitro fertilization (success rate: 20%) tap into what Becker identifies as a specifically American tolerance for gambling and risk; at the same time, she suggests, they invoke a more conventional Protestant ethic of perseverance and meritocracy. Becker's interview subjects believe they'll either get lucky or work hard enough to become pregnant, but the time-consuming, expensive and exhausting process leaves the women feeling like machines, dehumanized and violated, while the men feel emasculated and left out. The long quotations from the study's participants are far less compelling than Becker's intriguing argument that anxieties around reproductive technologies encapsulate cultural assumptions about what sorts of people (white, monied, educated) are encouraged to reproduce. Becker's work will interest the increasing number of people considering reproductive technologies, as well as health professionals, cultural anthropologists and general readers concerned with the developing relationship between technology and the body. Broad but not deep

This book is great at laying out and discussing a variety of issues related to infertility, the complex technologies used to treat it, and the emotions that arise from these things. However, I was continually frustrated while reading this book because I felt that the author did not analyze very well the things she said. She would point out interesting comments made by couples seeking fertility treatment, but then give the same anaytical comments over and over again about the different couples' feelings. Also, I felt she was too biased and critical in her assessment of fertility treatment. It seemed like every couple (indeed, virtually everyone in the book was a married couple, very little representation from anyone else) felt the same way, ultimately -- disillusioned, doubtful about themselves, cynical about the process, and overall disappointed, even angry and bitter. This has not been my own personal experience, and I have a hard time believing that everyone in her large study sample was so dismal. It just wasn't a sophisticated, layered analysis. But it will probably be interesting to non-academics who would like to get a foundation for some of the negatives associated with infertility treatments, and with having problems with infertility.

In the late 1990s, South Korean film and other cultural products, broadly known as hallyu (Korean wave), gained unprecedented international popularity. Korean films earned an all-time high of $60.3 million in Japan in 2005, and they outperformed their Hollywood competitors at Korean box offices. In Virtual Hallyu, Kyung Hyun Kim reflects on the precariousness of Korean cinema’s success over the past decade. Arguing that state film policies and socioeconomic factors cannot fully explain cinema’s true potentiality, Kim draws on Deleuze’s concept of the virtual—according to which past and present and truth and falsehood coexist—to analyze the temporal anxieties and cinematic ironies embedded in screen figures such as a made-in-the-USA aquatic monster (The Host), a postmodern Chosun-era wizard (Jeon Woo-chi), a schizo man-child (Oasis), a weepy North Korean terrorist (Typhoon), a salary man turned vengeful fighting machine (Oldboy), and a sick nationalist (the repatriated colonial-era film Spring of Korean Peninsula). Kim maintains that the full significance of hallyu can only be understood by exposing the implicit and explicit ideologies of protonationalism and capitalism that, along with Korea’s ambiguous post-democratization and neoliberalism, are etched against the celluloid surfaces.

I love this book!

Who knows how many books come out every year on the Tarot. The vast majority of them seem to be the same book paraphrased over and over again-penned perhaps by robots sitting in La Maison Dieu. There are exceptions, of course. Alejandro Jodorowsky's book being one that comes to mind.

None but this one, as far as I know, propose such exquisite and impossible ideas as this: "Our aim is not to arrive at an ultimate truth, but to stop, albeit briefly, at an exception made true." or "Instead of using a sequence of cards to arrive at some form of meaning, meaning-making will be the means through which we arrive at a sequence of cards, in a process that would have the Marseille Tarot shuffling itself."

For those of us nourished by the milk of dada, surrealism, and all that followed, and all that came before .. for those of us who incline towards the artist's, or the poet's sensibility, this book is a delight. It is not, as another reviewer has said, a crib or an introduction to the Tarot. But it would be a great second book to read on the Tarot, wherever you may have begun.

At all costs, do not buy this book if you are looking for a clear and concise guide to reading Tarot cards. Instead, what Enrique proposes is a radical perspective which brings the images to vibrant life through analogical thinking and poetic metaphor. In true dervish style, Enriquez challenges us into terrains uncharted by almost any other Tarot theorist out there--to a place where profound understanding precedes intellectual rationale and genuine art is made in the moment. You have been warned...
