Cocteau is a genius. In Opium, Diary of a Cure, he recounts the experience of his recovery from opium addiction in 1929. He gives an account that sometimes touches on his moment to moment experiences of drug withdrawal, sometimes remarks on his current thoughts about other people and things in his world. Since he lived in the world of avante-garde French culture, his comments include Picasso or Satie. His descriptions and criticisms include references to his own works or to the climate of the period and offer a stunning look at his own thoughts in this extraordinary moment.

This was my first experience with Jean Cocteau many years ago. It is a perfect read. This book provides you with a mix of Cocteau's personal history, philosophies, artwork, and overall poetic view of life. Olaudah Equiano created a record of the 18th century slave trade through his first-hand knowledge and experiences and the writing of this book. Born in Eboe, Africa, what is now Nigeria, he begins by describing life in Eboe and illustrates the cultural, religious, and moral aspects of African life as he knew and understood them.

In 1756, at the age of 11, he was kidnapped, torn from his family and all that he knew. He was sold into slavery and brought to the West Indies under cruel, torturous conditions. He was bought and sold by one seafaring captain and then another and another, as per the whims and needs of each. Early on in his life as a slave, one of his masters gave him the name Gustavas Vassa. Although at first he refused the name, he was taught harshly to make it his, the name he then used for most of his life.

During one voyage to England as a slave, Olaudah Equiano found Christianity. Fascinated with the religion, he visited churches and began studying the Bible. Eventually he was baptized as a Protestant of the Church of England. He was an avid student of the Bible and a devout believer and later sought missionary work in Africa but was denied ordainment.

In 1766 he was granted his freedom. As a free black man, he continued his association with the captains of ships, yet he continued to endure cruelties, often finding himself at death's door and wishing death to take him. From there, however, the account is of his religious experiences and understanding, his deep religious convictions, and his desire to do missionary work. For me, the book ended with his freedom from slavery.

Olaudah Equiano was there. The telling of history does not get any better than that.

Fabulous First Hand Narrative of Slavery and Maritime Trade

A wonderful story of tragedy and faith by one of the first narratives of a literary freed slave. A first hand account by an exceptional man abducted from the interior region of Benin in west central Africa. Thankfully for him, and his readers, he was able to become very literate in English language and writing. His honesty and integrity, along with his intelligence, hard work, command of the English language, and quest for faith led him to lead a rewarding life in an era when black people were extremely abused. It is a gripping tale that I recommend to everyone, no excuses, it was a free download to a Prime member on Amazon. It inspires me to research any rumors that this book in inauthentic in any way. It describes an era between the 1740's and the 1780's. It will be of interest to those reading about slavery and maritime trade.

A fantastic introduction to history's most heroic villains

I encountered Henry Bradley's book The Story of the Goths a short time ago, and was delighted to find a readable, enjoyable account of a people that left such an indelible impression on our history. The Goths are well-remembered for the infamous sack of Rome in 410 A.D. Their name is still associated (though through roundabout channels) with darkness and fear. But the truth of their story is not at all what the film clips of filthy, roaring barbarians would have you believe. The Goths actually saved the West, not just once but several times. Their legacy is still very much with us, forming a cultural element deep within peoples ranging from eastern Europe to South and Central America.
In doing research for my own book (a novel) I spent several years reading everything about the Goths that I could find - both primary and secondary sources, trying to put together a fuller picture of these mysterious people. I learned a great deal, but I must say that nowhere did I find all the information arranged in such a way as it is here in Bradley's book. The account that emerges is vivid and yet concise enough to be clear and easy to read.
One thing that has struck me as slightly odd about the book is that some of the language belies bias (i.e. words like "heathen" and savage") that would not be unusual at all in Gibbon, Burry, or any of the classic historians of the era, but seem "old fasioned" by contemporary standards. At first I thought the book was a good deal older than the 2013 copyright. Regardless, these are subtle and for most should not detract from the enjoyment or the bountiful education that the book provides.
I highly recomend this book to anyone interested in the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Dark Ages, or in understanding the European story.

Who were the Goths ?

I have read many histories where the "Goths, Ostrogoths, and Visigoths" were mentioned, but I never understood who these people were, where they came from, and where they fit into the story of European culture. Thanks to the scholarship of Henry Bradley, I now have a working understanding of the Goths, but many questions remain for me to research. No references are given, and it desperately needs more illustrations - especially maps showing where these people were and when!

This book is a fun read and fills in the details on a people ...

Really interesting part of history of which I had a very vague understanding (mostly from Gibbons). This book is a fun read and fills in the details on a people now mostly forgotten. What I love most about reading these types of history books is the little gems that pop out and fill in the why's on so many things that still shape our world today. If you are looking for an example of how leadership matters read the chapters about Belisarius and Theodoric. Another gem; the source of the Spanish laws against the Jews are discussed, an historic tragedy that recently resurfaced in Spanish politics.
