Timeless medical book - with a clinical approach to evaluating the acute abdomen written by seasoned practitioners, and updated with latest diagnostics. A must read for all in primary care and emergency medicine.

Critical book for surgeons and ER docs

Are you going into gen surg or ER? What about pediatrics or ob/gyn? Rural family med? Do you plan on providing healthcare to human beings?
If yes to any of these questions, then you definitely can benefit from this book. It gives a great breakdown of the various causes of abdominal pain as well as a guide to performing a thorough yet also time and cost effective differential diagnosis. This book will be of most benefit to ER and surgery physicians but anybody who deals with patients (hospitalists and rural family med especially) will likely benefit.
It is not a quick reference type of book, but if you invest the time to read it and understand the concepts you will find your need for such materials vastly reduced.

As an Emergency RN, I was recommended this book by one of the physicians several years ago and have always had this in my wish list. I finally took the plunge and have not regretted it. It should make every provider realize how poor there hands on assessment really is, as Cope made these diagnoses without the aid of the CT Scan. At work sometimes, I think the radiologists are the only real diagnosticians anymore.

Karen Welch spent much of her career with Ford Motor Company after graduating with a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering from Tennessee Technological University. At Ford, she held both plant and staff management positions in areas including Quality, Engineering, and Production. Welch has been a third party auditor since 1997 working in many industries including automotive, glass, rubber, plastics, chemicals, steel, and transportation. She has audited many large Fortune 500 companies and also worked as a trainer and consultant. Nemai Chandra Karmakar, PhD, is the lead researcher at the Monash Microwave, Antenna, RFID and Sensor Laboratory (MMARS) at Monash University, Australia. He received his PhD in ITEE from the University of Queensland, Australia, in February 1999. Dr. Karmakar is a pioneer in fully printable Chipless RFID tags and sensors, readers, signal processing, and smart antennas. He has published more than 350 scientific journal and conference articles, 9 books, 35 book chapters, and 9 patent applications.

Mohammad Zomorrodi, PhD, is a R&D engineer at RFS, Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Zomorrodi has served as a lecturer at various universities in Iran for more than 6 years. Hereceived his PhD at the Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering Department of Monash University in 2015. He has written several conference papers, journal articles and has worked on two books in the field.

Chamath Divarathne, PhD, is a design engineer at Unico Computer Systems Pty Ltd, Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Divarathnereceived his PhDat the Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering Department of Monash University in 2015. The book helped me get over a hard time

My Grandfather named Bob, recently past away, and during the funeral, this enchanting book was read. Not only did it bring smiles of joy, yet smiles of sadness, but tears to grown men. Every member of my family now owns a copy of the book, and every time we seem sad about him passing away, we remember "Just Bob was there". I believe this book is not only for children, but adults as well, and everyone should read it.

About the Author
Howard Glasser, M.A. is founder of Children s Success Foundation and designer of The Nurtured Heart Approach. He and Jennifer Easley are the co-authors of Transforming the Difficult Child: The Nurtured Heart Approach (1999), currently the to selling book on the topic of ADHD. He is also the co-author of The Inner Wealth Initiative: The Nurtured Heart Approach in Education (2007), currently the top selling book in the area of school interventions. He has been a featured guest on CNN and a consultant on 48 Hours and lectures in the U.S. and internationally, teaching therapists, educators, and parents about The Nurtured Heart Approach, which is now being used in hundreds of thousands of homes and classrooms around the world. Howard is former Director and Clinical Supervisor of the Center for the Difficult Child in Tucson. He has been a consultant for numerous psychiatric, judicial, and educational programs. Although he has done extensive doctoral work in the fields of Clinical Psychology and Educational Leadership, he feels his own years as a difficult child contributed the most to his understanding of the needs of challenging children and to the success of his approach. The Last Parenting Book You Will Need

I was one of those people who, as a teenager, I began reading parenting magazines and parenting books, long before I ever had children because I wanted to store away helpful techniques for later. After my children were born I continued to read and actually apply the things I thought would work. So, I have read a lot of parenting books - 1-2-3 Magic, Parenting the Strong willed child, Love and Logic, How to talk so your kids will listen.... Many of them have great insight but Transforming the Difficult Child is the last one I will ever read. It uses the Nurtured Heart Approach, which is so simple you might not think it will work, but it does. By simple I don't mean easy. It takes a lot of work and practice before you have it right. But the technique is not complicated.

I had the privilege of being guided by a clinical psychologist as I was learning this technique, which helped me to stick to it, and correct me when I failed to understand or when I started to do it the wrong way. If I hadn't had that guidance I may not have fully understood the concept, and probably would have done it wrong. It is not about praising your children or complimenting them or telling them they are amazing. Those techniques are becoming popular but really do our children a disservice because it often is something the child really has no control over. The point is to narrate to the child what they are doing (without wrapping it in a compliment), and, if needed, explain why that is a desired behavior. It uses rules, which are concrete and easy for children to understand and "resets" instead of time out. A reset gets the child's attention and gives him the ability to immediately change his behavior, whereas an arbitrary time-out does not accomplish this goal. Children want to be seen, and they want to know they are seen, and loved. You accomplish this by simply narrating what you see and refusing to engage when the behavior is negative. My son will come into the room and I will say, "I notice you have your red shoes on today." They might look at you like you are nuts but they feel good, they know they are seen.

It's way more powerful than I am making it sound here, but there is so much gold in this book. It works for any age and any behavior. I think there is a textbook on this approach as well but get the workbook instead because it tells you how to do it and lays the steps out for you making it easier to apply. Re-read it over again because you will keep learning from this book every time you do. I highly recommend this book!

Which character will be your favorite?

This story is populated with lots of wonderfully rendered characters with strong motivations. While the many points-of-view remind me of The Spoonriver Anthology, they do provide greater depth of understanding and a richer experience of the events as they unfold.

The plot lines are braided alongside each other, and then some of the strands merge, making it a challenge for the reader to favor any individual character. I tended to like the character with the POV of the moment.

Relationships have deep connections that are strained due to complications, and these life or death complications add to the dramatic tension. There is humor, friendship, a bit of romance, wonderful fight scenes, hints of magic, lots of plot twists and turns, and some characters die while some survive. The various settings and politics/cultures affect the characters' actions. Have a snack handy as the food is described deliciously.

There are grim scenes, but they are not gratuitously gory. The descriptions of violence leave off where I would turn away were I to watch this story enacted on a movie screen.

I recommend this book to older, more seasoned, fantasy readers as they would appreciate more deeply the relationship nuances and tensions because of their own life experiences. I especially appreciated the nearly error-free writing.

While the book ends without definite closure to the plot lines, some on grim notes, it's obvious there's more to come. There's a great deal of groundwork laid for the next book as well as suspenseful momentum. I look forward to reading the next installment in this epic series.

Fantastic Grim Dark From an Author to Watch

Mr. Ireman is a gifted author; if you've a wit of sense, you are about to hit the buy button.

He was born for the Grim Dark genre. His characters are wonderfully broken, terrifying and pathetic. His plot is impossible to second guess without recycling trendy plot twists anther insipid gimmicks.

I occasionally had to stop reading this book to take a break: the story was so dark and events so shocking that I was actually affected. I'm a 44 year-old crabby, military vet; this has never happened to me.

To say this book is good is far too simple; this book is complex, dark and compelling. It is a creative, disturbing and wonderful addition to the genre. I can only hope that we readers lend Mr. Ireman the ability to continue writing by directly supporting his efforts.

Lastly, I'd be remiss were I not to mention the exceptional level of editing in this book: typos are not present; there's no logical fallacies; it's a thing of beauty.

I'm not sure what to put here... good luck?

The book starts with a rather bold and somewhat condescending statement from the author. Unfortunately, he falls well short of that statement. I found the book to be a blatant carbon copy of the way George RR Martin introduces and develops characters. Again, unfortunately, that is also a disappointment due to the incredibly boring themes and subject matter. Overall, I found myself punishing my mind to stay with the plot line. Even when something interesting was about to happen, I found myself bored out if my mind as the lead up was so plodding that you could almost take a pen to paper and write it yourself. The writing also lacked a lot of the usual twists and turns this genre is known for. Sorry, no unbelievable tales here. Just people, you get little chance to start knowing, being nasty to each other - the end. I gave it three stars because the grammar and structure was good. No spelling errors.
