"The Adventures of Soberman" is a great read!

This book should prove to be an inspiration for anyone who is either (or both as the author is) an alcoholic or gay person or in any type of recovery program. The author not only managed to come to terms with both his alcoholism and sexuality, but has also been able to turn his life around and be of help to others with similar issues. While acknowledging that his family background, in terms of his alcoholism, may have contributed to his own alcoholism, he does not harbor resentment towards them. Rather, as the child of an alcoholic, his book embraces his family because he realizes that people are not perfect and everyone has to deal with the problems of their parents, including his own children. He has come to terms with his life and, refreshingly, takes responsibility for his own actions. For me, the best aspect of this book is how he has learn to accept his own foibles and the foibles of those around him with both wit and wisdom.

Funny, lighthearted, warm read about a sometimes tragic life

This book is great! It is well worth your time if you're interested in recovery / sobriety, spirituality, issues of sexuality, or just interested in a light-hearted, comical autobiography of an Irish Catholic, born & raised in Hell's Kitchen, sent off ("volunteered") to Vietnam.

It's really got some humorous anecdotes in it that I just couldn't stop myself from turning the page, wondering when I'd be laughing next. Often, it wasn't several pages before I was cracking up - again and again.

Plus, the honesty - of his alcoholism, his battle w/ being gay, in the closet, out of the closet, in his spiritual life & trying to balance that against his Catholic up-bringing was just very revealing, honest, sincere and intriguing.

This book is well worth your time, a quick read and more than enjoyable.

The Adventures of Soberman! is a tall glass of laugh-out-loud misadventures about the author's battle with alcoholism and everything else. The author cleverly recounts his life experiences growing up Irish-Catholic in Hell's Kitchen, going to war in Vietnam, being married, realizing he is gay and discovering Alcoholics Anonymous-all while peppering his memories with hilarious and often touching anecdotes. Soberman! just might leave you with a thought hangover.

About the Author
Robert A. Carp is professor of political science at the University of Houston. Ronald Stidham is professor emeritus of Government and Justice Studies at Appalachian State University. He is coauthor of The Federal Courts, Fifth Edition, with Robert A. Carp and Kenneth L. Manning; The State Courts, with Robert A. Carp and Kenneth L. Manning; and numerous articles in legal, social science, and criminal justice journals. Kenneth L. Manning is professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He is coauthor with Robert A. Carp and Ronald Stidham of The Federal Courts (Fifth Edition) and The State Courts, and coeditor of Political Perspectives: Essays on Government and Politics. About the Author
Andreas Jess studied at the Technical University of Aachen. He obtained his PhD and habilitation from the University of Karlsruhe for his work on syngas formation and up-grading of raw coke-oven gas. In 1998 he became professor for technical chemistry in Aachen. Since 2001 he is owner of the chair of Chemical Engineering at the University of Bayreuth. His research interests are the optimization and modeling of catalytic processes, utilization of ionic liquids, and processes for production of fuels and chemicals from fossil and renewable resources.

Peter Wasserscheid studied chemistry at the Technical University of Aachen and obtained his PhD for the work on the use of ionic liquids. After a postdoc at BP Chemicals in Great Britain Wasserscheid returned to Aachen. In 2001 he became Scientific Supervisor of the Solvent Innovation Company and since 2003 he owns the chair of Chemical Reaction Engineering at the University of Erlangen-N�rnberg.
At present he researches the development of concepts for highly selective catalytic processes. He has received several awards including the Max-Buchner-Award of DECHEMA (2001), the Innovation Award of the German Economy (2003, together with Solvent Innovation GmbH, Cologne) and the Leibniz Award of the German Science Foundation (2006).

Excellent textbook

Looking for a well-writen, deeply-discussed contents introductory chemical engineering book? THIS IS IT!

Not everyone can talk about unit operations and chemical processes the way this book does. The contents are clear, (You must have elementary knowledge on chemistry, a bit of physics, a bit of thermodynamics), intermediate conceptual depth, but even this It's the perfect challenge for any undergraduate chemical engineering course.

Warning: It has a lot of topics; two or three semesters perhaps.

I'm chemical engineering professor, and I'm sure this book won't disappoint you if you're llokin for a good complementary book to Smith and van Ness's or other chemical engineering classics textbooks.

Highly recommended.

This book is confusing and relatively poorly written.

I am a hands on designer in need of clear, concise design data on DC - DC converters. This book has been difficult to use. My associate also has tried to use this book with somewhat the same impression.

I have found mistakes in circuits and poor derivations, missing important intermediate steps. The author relies heavily on papers by Middlebrook, so you might as well read them yourself.

The smart approach to convert power

I truly believe that this book is bringing good engineering approach to dc-dc converters. I personally have read a lot of diffrent books on this subject but I found this book to be both acadamic and practical. It goes through specifics without unnecessary details. Although this is not a cook book but If you are interested in the subject of power conversion, I recommend to have this book in your library. You will find it useful.

This book gets to the heart of converter design and analysis

The authur has come up with unique methods of analyzing converters in their close loop form. He presents actual design examples showing both theoretical and measured results for several key topologies. In addition, he discusses filter design, series pass regulators, methods of converter control and finally methods of modeling and simulation. I would highly recommend this book as a reference for the advanced designer.

It is a good book overall for anyone who either needs it for a psychology class or is interested in working with children. It is very useful and has a lot of useful facts, plus the price is a steal for a brand new copy.

They do not make this clear at all but this is the international version. Which means you can't resale it. If you are planning on keeping it this is the way to go because it's cheeper. If not don't buy this version!

it takes the fun out of child development

The paperback version is nice because it's cheaper... but after reading it, I think I would prefer the hard cover. Paperback books of a small size are fine, but this one is too large to work as a paperback. I have a hard time reading it because if I put it on my lap it sort of flops over and I can't see the whole page.

As to the content... I found it to be a little insulting. A lot of the points the text makes are sort of trite and obvious. It says things like "children are our future." This is true, but it doesn't seem like something that needs to be said in a college level textbook.

It looks pretty, with nice pictures and quotes in the margins, but there just doesn't seem to be much substance. I think a topic as interesting as child development should have a more interesting book.
