Great low cost advice for Germany

I have not used Let's Go in years but so far everything in here looks great! Sure wish I had more time in Germany to see more of the things they recommend but we'll just have to be selective.

I love Let's Go, but don't ever rely to heavily on a travel guide..

This book, just like the other Let's Go books, is very informative, personable and right on par for a college age traveler. It has helped me find numerous good eats and great places to stay.

I have used several different "Let's Go" travel books now and have been very pleased. My favorite of them is still Italy, and here is why the Germany one didn't get the top spot:

I used this book while working as an au pair in Tuebingen and relied on it rather heavily throughout my travels. I traveled to about 10 cities from this book, as well as 2 others not listed, and found it to be helpful in almost every way. I was not as pleased with the dining recommendations as other books, but still found it very helpful. However, while visiting Frankfurt (which I definitely recommend), I spent about 2 hrs walking around (apparently aimlessly) only to figure out that two items are mislabeled on the map. The given address in the description section is correct, but the map was wrong.. TWICE in the same city! I realize everyone makes mistakes and I will continue to use Let's Go, but it was super frustrating!

On the flip side, I ended up finding a VERY tasty little cafe near where the other one should have been, and it definitely reminded me that you should never rely too heavily on any sort of travel guide.

I found this book useful as I have earlier Let's Go travel guides in the past. However, being over two years now since it was published, it was sometimes out of date (locales had closed, prices had gone up, etc.) On the other hand, general travel tips were still right on.

Wanted to like it but I can't get past the crappy writing

The Good:
I think this book has some good ideas and although it isn't really an instructional guide or particularly rich with information it serves as an inspiration to dive into something a little more serious like John Holt. I like that she integrates her experiences with her family into the book.

The Not-so-Good:
This woman is a terrible writer. There, I said it. Her target audience seems to be people who know nothing about unschooling philosophy from the way that she addresses the reader but then she consistently demeans her target audience with comments like, "Open your eyes and see how brainwashed we truly are..." Um, yeah, people generally don't like to be told that they're ignorant and doing this within the first 5 pages isn't that great of an idea either. Throughout the book she sounds so high and mighty for breaking the parenting paradigm. Later in the book she tells us that we might cry from the guilt when we realize what we have been doing to our children. It's kind of ironic how the tone of the book seems so negative when she's telling us to think positive. The bolding of certain sentences is distracting. I feel like I'm IN SCHOOL BEING PUNISHED, which I assume isn't really what she was going for. Perhaps she should take some of her own advice and trust her reader's ability to recognize what's important. I had to quit halfway through because there is only so much crappy essay I can read before I feel compelled to whip out the red pen.

In a nutshell:
Probably not worth it there are better books out there. Next time you're thinking of writing a book consider a ghost writer because you're making us look bad.

If you thrive on chaos and poverty...

Since I paid full price for this book (which I rarely do) and wanted to review it, I forced myself to finish it. Here's what I've got:

The writing is not very good. The book feels like an extremely long run-on sentence. That said, I could have overlooked the poor writing and organization if it were possible to glean some useful advice/information from it. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

This book is largely a summary of Dayna and Joe's parenting philosophy - trust your children to educate themselves (some degree of truth there), provide for all of their wants (since wants are, according to Dayna, needs) and let them use their time as they see fit. Their kids have no responsibilities and must follow no rules. They may watch as much TV as they like, eat what they like (in fact Dayna prepares a buffet of things that each person in the family likes to eat for meals and brings it to them where ever they are), sleep when they like, etc. If they don't feel like cleaning their room or the mess they made with craft supplies, Dayna is happy to do it for them. If they want to take lessons or go on a trip, Dayna and Joe oblige. The entire first half of the book I thought that this couple must be independently wealthy - who else could have the resources to cater to their 4 kids' every whim?

By the end of the book I discovered that this couple has interesting, although not unique, ideas about how money is made and how it should be spent. Dayna is happy to spend money on drum sets her son stops using after a few lessons, gymnastic classes her son quits after the first session, etc. Money, Dayna explains, comes from the universe when you want it and focus your thoughts on it. I wish I could say that I had never heard of this philosophy before, but I have grown up surrounded by missionaries who sit at home and pray for the Lord to put food on the table. If you can hear the scorn in my voice then you can imagine the cycles of poverty, debt and disillusionment that I've witnessed. You can also imagine how well I think that philosophy would apply to the North Koreans who are so impoverished that they are resorting to cannibalism. Boy, I wish someone would just tell them to trust the universe...

There is also very little advice/information about education in this book. Any learning that Dayna's kids do is, apparently, appreciated for it own sake and not for any possible utility they may gain from it. This runs contrary to every conviction that I have about raising and educating children since I believe that giving children the tools they need to survive, and hopefully thrive, as adults is the sole purpose of parents. What good are your expressions of love if you send your kids out into the world to be crushed?

Besides not having any long term goals for their children (I'm sure that counts as trying to control them), this couple also seems to enjoy a rather unique situation where the father works from home and has a flexible schedule - which means that Dayna can run to the grocery store by herself when she doesn't have time to take her kids "along in partnership" or that she can take a break from the kids anytime she's going crazy. I wonder if she would be able to sustain her positive energy with a husband who works long hours and travels regularly?

All in all this book was a great disappointment. My advice for prospective unschoolers? Pick up a copy of "Boundaries with Kids," and memorize it. Then proceed to find creative ways to incorporate learning into your everyday life. It's as easy as putting Pandora's "Johann Sebastian Bach Radio" on the stereo and a big, glorious map of the world on the wall. Happy learning! :)

Excellent book, until you realize the author doesn't practice what she preaches

Unlike some recent negative reviews, I've actually read the book, and found it very inspiring. It really helped me understand the mindset and philosophy behind unschooling, which has been far more helpful than any laundry list of parenting tips and tricks I've read to date. With our 3 year old son, asking myself "would I treat an adult this way?" as Dayna suggests in the book has been immensely helpful in learning to raise him in an environment where he is a respected member of the family.

EDIT: I really wish I'd started out learning about unschooling from another source in the first place. Had I bought a physical copy of this book, I'd sooner compost it than give it away to anyone. See the below links for more about who Dayna Martin is, and why she shouldn't be trusted.
