Pale Stage Adaptation of Book and Film

Published in 1987, MISERY is one of Stephen King's best regarded novels. Although it somewhat softened the novel, a 1990 film version starring James Caan and Kathy Bates was also a critical and popular success. And then there is the play, a 2005 stage adaptation by Simon Moore, best known as the writer of such television programs and series as TRAFFIK and DINOTOPIA. The play has had stagings in New York's Off-Broadway district, London, and (somewhat oddly) Athens and Dubai. It has also been widely produced by regional and community theatres. But the reason seems to be the magic words "Stephen King's MISERY," not the play itself, which is a ho-hum two character, single set show that lacks the power of either novel or film.
The story is well known. Writer Paul Sheldon is famous for a series of romance novels featuring a character named Misery Chastaine. He is rescued from a serious car crash by Annie Wilkes, who nurses him back to health at her remote farmhouse. She is, she claims, his "number one fan"--but she is outraged when his latest book kills the character Misery, and she turns on Paul, holding him prisoner, torturing him, and forcing him to write another novel that brings Misery back to life. The novel was disturbingly graphic, the film less so but still powerful. And none of it translates very well to the live stage.
If you are a hardcore fan, you might be interested in how the story has been adapted to the stage, and so it might be worth reading from that point of view. But this is not really a good adaptation, much less a good play. Not recommended.
