About the Author
Marc Tedeschi is an internationally respected designer, photographer, educator, and martial arts master. He has studied Eastern philosophy, healing arts, and combatives for more than 40 years, training extensively in Hapkido, Taekwondo, Jujutsu, Judo, and Karate. A prolific writer, Mr. Tedeschi's landmark publications rank with the finest ever produced on the healing and martial arts. He is the author of over a dozen works, including the 1136-page Hapkido, the 896-page Taekwondo, Essential Anatomy for Healing and Martial Arts, and a unique series of general martial arts books that provide an in-depth look at the core concepts and techniques shared by a broad range of martial arts.

Solid book...

Contrary to several other reviewers I think this is a great book. I've studied several martial arts including Judo and BJJ. I'm a good enough grappler to hold my own with most people. Many of the techniques in this book can be found in the current crop of BJJ books. The difference being this book has better pictures and text. That can make all the difference. There are a few techniques that I would skip over, but that could be said about any martial art book that I own.
I've always thought of Hapkido as Korean Jujitsu. It is wrong to assume that because a system has kicks it can't offer anything else. Don't pay any attention to the BJJ hype in some of the other reviews. This is a worth while purchase.

So many people are one minded about things...this is a great book...a very good book for anyone looking to finish and I mean FINISH an opponent on the ground not just wrestle around...real good techniquea that could be added to anyones arsenal

Excellent book for self defence

If you are a practicioner of Brazillian JJ, this book is not for you.
But if you intend to pick up a few new ideas on how to prevent yourself from ending up on the ground in the first place, or defending yourself with some unconventional techniques, read on.
Most of us who learn self defence do not want to roll around on the ground amongst the gravel and broken glass to defend ourselves against an attacker. This, along with the threat of multiple attackers,are weaknesses of the Brazillian JJ system.
None the less, Brazillian JJ should be studied because defending yourself on the ground is very important, and for this it is very good.
There are many other styles out there though, and Mr. Tedeschi shows some great escapes, counters and take downs which Martial Artists with an open mind, and not restricted by a "my style is the best" philosophy should appreciate.

In Modern optics and electronics, the use of new crystalline materials makes it indispensable not only to know the structure of a device but also to understand the dynamics of Physical processes occurring within it. This book provides the fundamentals of crystals dynamics. Classical and quantum mechanical models are introduced and both ideal and nonideal crystal lattices are considered.

The topics discussed in this book comprise the spectrum of vibrations, the theory of phonon gas, solutions in ID crystals, the theory of quantum crystals, dislocation dynamics, the melting of�2D crystals, second sound in crystals, lattices of magnetic bubbles, and others.

The second revised and updated edition contains a completely reorganized chapter on the one-dimensional crystal lattice. Furthermore, a new chapter on elastic superlattices has been added. considerable attention is devoted to the dislocation mechanisms as a basis of the theory of plasticity and numerous technological applications of crystalline materials.

About the Author
Arnold M. Kosevich studied at Kharkov University (PhD 1954 and Dr.Sci. 1964). Between 1954 and 1957 he worked at Chernovtsy University and 1957--1974 at the Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology. He was appointed professsor at Kharkov University in 1966. Since 1974 he has been Head of the theoretical department at the B. Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Now he works also at the Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology.

His main scientific works concern the theoretical physics of condensed matter, namely, the electron theory of metals, the dynamics of crystal lattice, the theory of dislocations and point defects in solids, and the nonlinear dynamics of magnetization in magnetically ordered crystals.

A.M. Kosevich jointly with Prof. I.M. Lifshits determined a quantitative relation between the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations and the shape of the Fermi surface for electron gas in metals (Lifshitz-Kosevich formula). He is the author of more than 200 scientific papers and of several book publications.

My belief is that to fully appreciate where we are, it's important to know whence we came. Women's Gymnastics a History is a remarkable compilation of statistics, photos and stories, combined in such a way as to really give us a feeling of how it used to be and who the people are who made gymnastics what it is today. As a gymnastics commentator, I'm sure it will be a great reference book.

Before the "Miller" was common on beam, and even before the uncommon Shannon Miller herself was on earth, generations of gymnasts sustained the sport beautifully through its evolution and controversies. Paying perfect homage to the legacies of past idols such as Vera Caslavska , Natalia Kuchinskaya and Olga Korbut is Minot Simons' Women's Gymnastics a History, (Volume I, 1966 to 1974). The 432 page hard cover chronicle "replete with 177 color and black and white photos, plus 84 diagrams, 82 routine descriptions, 22 updated biographies, and miscellaneous features and results" is perhaps the most staggeringly impressive account ever of arguably the sport's most glamorous era. Young readers can enjoy the dramatic photos (most splendid of which include the color shots of Kuchinskaya on p. 73 and p. 75) and concise yet insightful profiles. They can also marvel and even chuckle at the skills performed on "primitive" equipment - non-padded beams, plain floor exercise mats and bars that were set for hip beats.

Today's fans can also discover the accomplished pasts of women who continue to influence the sport. Current Canadian coach (and former Soviet Olympian) Elvira Saadi is featured on the front cover. Prominent international judges and former Olympians Lyubov Burda Andrianova (back cover), Joan Moore Gnat and Linda Metheny Mulvihill are also profiled between the covers.

Sentimentalists can savor the personal memoirs which preserve and provide fresh hindsight to the careers of Larissa Latynina, Ludmilla Turischeva and 20 others. A Masterpiece

Last I checked, website Grips Etc was still selling new copies of this book for $35. So before you drop $240+ on a used copy, I suggest you investigate that avenue.

Not quite a coffee table volume, but more than a mere history, this is easily the most comprehensive, thoroughly illustrated, and ambitious history of the sport I've ever encountered. With its play-by-play of every major gymnastics event, it threatens to be TOO detailed. But who can really complain, especially when there's so much interesting stuff on offer (particularly the fascinating "where are they now" interviews with the legends of the sport)? And it's all printed on glossy white paper. Classy.

Book has some drawbacks. There isn't an index, which is a sin considering there's 400 pages of detailed text to sort through. The prose is frustratingly passive in tone and, at times, chaotically arranged (quoting paragraphs-long passages from other sources really breaks the flow). This robs the book significantly of dramatic power. The photography is good, but not breathtaking, and most of the images are relatively small, which might frustrate fans seeking something more, er, coffee-tably. In other words, this is a history for fans of 1966-1974 gymnastics only--which must be a very small audience indeed.

But that small audience will be hugely impressed. You realize how special this book is when you consider how most gymnastics history books today are just heavily authorized biographies, "inspirational" works that, quite honestly, are very dull (the only really good reads lately have been those that criticize the sport--at least there's *drama* when things go horribly wrong). It amazes me that there is a void that has yet to be filled for a great illustrated history of gymnastics (even the International Gymnastics Federation has failed to address that, preferring to put out coffee table photo books that are frustratingly devoid of detail--more propaganda works peppered with inspirational writing than real histories).

So, this book stands alone. There's never been anything like it--making the fact that the sequels seem fated never to materialize all the sadder. The thing really is (almost) worth $240. But go to Grips Etc. first for your $35 copy anyway. ;-)

For all you fans of women's gymnastics, this is the book you have been waiting for! It leaves no stone unturned in the gymnastics happenings between 1966-1974. We see the descriptions, both in word and in Code of Points illustrations, of the routines performed by famous gymnasts such as Caslavska, Tourisheva, Rigby, Korbut, Zuchold, Janz, and many others. The pictures are terrific! So are the bio's.
This book takes you back to the glory days when women's gymnastics was performed by WOMEN, not by anorexic teenaged dwarves. In fact, it inspired me to resume gymnastics after an 18-year hiautus!
I got in touch recently with Mr. Simons, the author, to order Volume II, but it has not yet been released. Please do so immediately, sir!! So many people are waiting eagerly for it!

For those who dispair that there are no books for the gymnastics fan written for an average age above 10, here is your book! I love the sport as a fan. Beyond back issues of gymnastics magazines, it is hard to find good information. This book is excellent! It describes in detail the competitions, routines, and competitors of its time. My only disappointment is that it ends in 1974, and I have yet to see Volume 2 hit the shelves. A great read!

This is one of Rogers and Hammerstein's greatest musicals of all time! It contains a history of the show, history of the composers, even those who starred in the show. It's a great book on the history of the show as well as the musical examples! This book is a must have for any serious musical theater person!

Pretty book - not much practical use, though

You are getting what you pay for. While this might be a decent buy for a hobbyist, it is not much use if you are a professional because several pieces (if not all of them) are not in the original key. Moreover, the keys the songs have been transposed to actually make them more difficult to sing.

Go from Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur

Since June 2013 I've been following WP Curve and watched them transpire into an uber-successful business.

As the title suggests, Dan provides a step-by-step guide in how to launch in 7 days. Each day is dedicated towards a given task that builds upon itself until you launch on day 7. The writing style obligates the reader to take action, which is exactly what Dan wants.

Although the tactics Dan provides are excellent, where his book really stands out is the mindset of moving from a wantrepreneur to entrepreneur. This is best illustrated with the Chapter on Idea, Execution, Hustle -- and in particular, the art of the anti-hustle that so many wantrepreneurs are guilty of. Here is my favorite excerpt from that chapter.

"Anti-hustle is what wantrepreneurs do. They do everything other than what needs to be done. They keep coding. They design new features. They optimize their site. They think up new, world-changing ideas. They hang out at startup events discussing their idea. They go to startup weekend and launched a new idea. They do everything other than what they need to do - which, more often than not, is getting more customers."

There is no question who wrote this book, as Dan's no-nonsense approach is evident throughout. He speaks in a brutally honest tone in order to help his readers avoid the mistakes he's made and to launch as quickly as possible.

If you're a wantrepreneur (or even an entrepreneur) you MUST read this book.

Many good, commonsense tips, but the fundamental premise is flawed

The 7 Day Startup offers many good tips for the starting entrepreneur, and the idea that you should focus on only what is most important, get the business running as soon as possible and learn as you go is sound.

However, IMO the book overgeneralizes. Generally, you can not start a business in seven days. You cannot develop a physical product or software in seven days (or any similarly short time period), and you cannot write a meaningful amount of content in that time. While there certainly are business models that could work that way (the author's own being the prime example), there are many more that can not. Dropbox, cited more than once in the book, certainly could not have been started without at least a minimal client software and servers to run on, and this type of preparation takes time.

If you happend to find a business model that can be set up very quickly, it very likely involves a significant amount of manual work at first, and thus carries another risk that is not even mentioned once: what if there is more demand than you can handle? Not being able to deliver can be as dangerous to a starting business as having too few customers: the customers are disappointed, never come back, and very likely will comment negatively in social media. That risk can be reduced with good contingency planning, or with a business that is somewhat scaleable from the start, but this typically takes preparation and time, and thus contradicts the premise of the book.

The author recommends that if you have a business idea that does not conform to the book's premise, you should rather find one that does. I am not sure I agree. Yes, the best way to learn starting a business is to do it, and maybe even fail a few times until you get it right. So in that way, setting up a "7-day-startup" might get you started quickly and provide a quick and low-risk learning opportunity. However, IMO it is more than likely that this type of business will simply not attract enough customers in the first place, and then you learn very little other than that it does not work.

I guess my more fundamental critique is this: the author seems to suggest that by starting up quickly with a very limited initial investment, you can virtually eliminate the risks involved in being an entrepreneur, and I feel that does not work. And while I do not mean to diminish the author's accomplishments, I do believe that he was somewhat lucky with his latest business, and now tries to unduly generalize his approach. It might work if the stars align right, but more likely, it might not.

On the positive side: the book offers a number of good practical tips, and as I said, the basic idea: create a minimally viable product, get it out the door, and see and react to what happens, is good advice. Whether it takes two weeks or six months to prepare is less important than not wasting time on things that don't really matter at that point in time and getting experience with real customers as soon as possible.

Changed my entire perspective on startups - and will save me huge amounts of time and effort.

In short - a very valuable resource for anybody starting, considering starting or who's failed with an Internet startup.

The book distinguishes itself by sharing Dan's experience and comparing the theories about launching against the (very different) reality. It's insightful and(I'm ashamed to admit) sometimes humorous when Dan followed traditional advice and failed miserably because of it.

I'm currently launching my own new startup and shall be following Dans advice closely as it encourages a business that's low-risk, fun and flexible.

PROS

- Readable in under 2 hours. I consider this a great trait when ultimately we want to read less and get straight to work.
- Loved learning about Dan's own experiences, it makes him very approachable and human
- Well organized with clear layout
- A fun casual tone made reading it easy and pleasurable
- As macabre as it sounds I actually really enjoyed reading about his failures - I could relate to them and felt reassured that he offered solutions to these real-world issues.
- Loved the contrarian ideas
- Really got a lot out of the info about validation - I'm considering a pre-launch for my own startup and this book convinced me to do things differently. This single piece of advice was truly invaluable.

CONS

- Section about Wordpress wasn't so great but if you need more information it's very easy to find complimentary free courses online
- Some of the tables in the book need rotating (in the PDF version) in order to read them.

Una maravillosa sorpresa

Una historia sin villanos ni intrigas pero que mantiene al lector cautivado con los di�logos r�pidos y divertidos. La historia se centra en Marc y Amy solo en ellos, lo que me gust� mucho ya que pudimos entender a los personajes, sus sentimientos y emociones. Tuve una sonrisa casi todo el tiempo que la le� por los di�logos y situaciones divertidas y hasta alguna lagrima en los momentos en que Amy cuenta su historia. Realmente la escritora logra llevar al lector toda la emoci�n y pasi�n de la historia, es maravilloso como a trav�s de las palabras no hace sentir la emoci�n de Amy al tocar el piano y las emociones de Marc por los recuerdos. Fue una escena inolvidable. �Por qu� cuatro estrellas? Me pareci� que el final fue muy r�pido y que una historia tan bonita necesitaba un poco m�s. La inocente Amy crey� que al hacer un trato muy especial con su vecino Marc no iba a salir raspada, pero s�lo olvid� una cosa... cuando el coraz�n entra en la ecuaci�n, cualquier trato puede volverse "casi perfecto".
Lectura muy amena, r�pida, entretenida y sobre todo rom�ntica.
Todos los libros de la autora son dignos de una recomendaci�n. Y si eres unas persona como yo, que gusta de las historias sin tantas vueltas en la trama, sin repeticiones innecesarias y sin tanta descripci�n de los entornos, entonces Minerva Hall es tu autora. :D

About the Author
Roman Payne (b. 1977) is an American-born novelist who immigrated to France in 1999. He is known for his poetic language, his return to classicism (what he terms "heroic" prose), and for his tales of initiation and wandering. Although he writes in English, his life in Paris, speaking entirely French, has influenced his work giving his prose an unusual Latinate quality. He is heavily influenced by Homeric Epic, as well as 18th and 19th Century French and European literature. A list of his works can be found at: romanpayne.com. Take a journey and fall in love all over again or for the first time

The Wanderess is told as if the main character was narrating the story, a unique point of view in my experience, it was beautifully told. I have been to quite a few different states with Colorado as the center of my world of experience, but I've never been overseas anywhere. Saul and Saskia wander, either chasing each other or together, through France, Spain, Northern Italy, and beyond, and unlike some books I've read, I was able to enjoy the journey as well as the drama of Saskia's drive to see the fulfillment of her prophecy. Of Saul's stubbornness as he determined to keep just as many secrets as Saskia did, even the one that would see the fruition of her prophecy that much sooner. I was drawn into their love, the passion and the turmoil of it, as it progressed through the growing pains of jealousy and trust, as it was tested by betrayal and entrapment. And best of all, I was able to see the quaint countryside and it's colorful people of all varieties. The world Roman Payne allowed me to see was full of life of all types, all types; do you know how hard that is to do? From peasants and common workers to aging actresses, from charlatans to royalty. They were all there. From summer in Paris to the dry heat of Tripoli.

An exciting novel of romance and intrigue

This is really a great book! It has all the elements that won't let me put in down without finding out what happens next--travel with a little history included, romance, conflict & intrigue, & poignant resolution. It is sensitive & sometimes fun, but also touches on many of life's important questions regarding honor, fidelity, trust, sexuality & familial connection. It has an out of the ordinary timelessness where the reader can settle on his/her own idea of the epoch, harkening back to life in earlier centuries & yet with essentially modern language & idioms. This is a story that will be remembered.

A fantastical and pleasurable read.

I finished this book tonight. It is a great, mysterious novel with passages of amorous beauty and noble manners. There are times when my concern with the central love affair seemed to lull, but then the story turned and exploded forward like a thoroughbred from the gate. My only qualm is with the fate of --- (you'll know who I mean), which differentiates this from a moral parable, and makes it a reflection of a certain life; advancing by cruelty and accident at times, or a flower strewn path. I'll be thinking about this story as I sleep tonight!
