Go from Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur

Since June 2013 I've been following WP Curve and watched them transpire into an uber-successful business.

As the title suggests, Dan provides a step-by-step guide in how to launch in 7 days. Each day is dedicated towards a given task that builds upon itself until you launch on day 7. The writing style obligates the reader to take action, which is exactly what Dan wants.

Although the tactics Dan provides are excellent, where his book really stands out is the mindset of moving from a wantrepreneur to entrepreneur. This is best illustrated with the Chapter on Idea, Execution, Hustle -- and in particular, the art of the anti-hustle that so many wantrepreneurs are guilty of. Here is my favorite excerpt from that chapter.

"Anti-hustle is what wantrepreneurs do. They do everything other than what needs to be done. They keep coding. They design new features. They optimize their site. They think up new, world-changing ideas. They hang out at startup events discussing their idea. They go to startup weekend and launched a new idea. They do everything other than what they need to do - which, more often than not, is getting more customers."

There is no question who wrote this book, as Dan's no-nonsense approach is evident throughout. He speaks in a brutally honest tone in order to help his readers avoid the mistakes he's made and to launch as quickly as possible.

If you're a wantrepreneur (or even an entrepreneur) you MUST read this book.

Many good, commonsense tips, but the fundamental premise is flawed

The 7 Day Startup offers many good tips for the starting entrepreneur, and the idea that you should focus on only what is most important, get the business running as soon as possible and learn as you go is sound.

However, IMO the book overgeneralizes. Generally, you can not start a business in seven days. You cannot develop a physical product or software in seven days (or any similarly short time period), and you cannot write a meaningful amount of content in that time. While there certainly are business models that could work that way (the author's own being the prime example), there are many more that can not. Dropbox, cited more than once in the book, certainly could not have been started without at least a minimal client software and servers to run on, and this type of preparation takes time.

If you happend to find a business model that can be set up very quickly, it very likely involves a significant amount of manual work at first, and thus carries another risk that is not even mentioned once: what if there is more demand than you can handle? Not being able to deliver can be as dangerous to a starting business as having too few customers: the customers are disappointed, never come back, and very likely will comment negatively in social media. That risk can be reduced with good contingency planning, or with a business that is somewhat scaleable from the start, but this typically takes preparation and time, and thus contradicts the premise of the book.

The author recommends that if you have a business idea that does not conform to the book's premise, you should rather find one that does. I am not sure I agree. Yes, the best way to learn starting a business is to do it, and maybe even fail a few times until you get it right. So in that way, setting up a "7-day-startup" might get you started quickly and provide a quick and low-risk learning opportunity. However, IMO it is more than likely that this type of business will simply not attract enough customers in the first place, and then you learn very little other than that it does not work.

I guess my more fundamental critique is this: the author seems to suggest that by starting up quickly with a very limited initial investment, you can virtually eliminate the risks involved in being an entrepreneur, and I feel that does not work. And while I do not mean to diminish the author's accomplishments, I do believe that he was somewhat lucky with his latest business, and now tries to unduly generalize his approach. It might work if the stars align right, but more likely, it might not.

On the positive side: the book offers a number of good practical tips, and as I said, the basic idea: create a minimally viable product, get it out the door, and see and react to what happens, is good advice. Whether it takes two weeks or six months to prepare is less important than not wasting time on things that don't really matter at that point in time and getting experience with real customers as soon as possible.

Changed my entire perspective on startups - and will save me huge amounts of time and effort.

In short - a very valuable resource for anybody starting, considering starting or who's failed with an Internet startup.

The book distinguishes itself by sharing Dan's experience and comparing the theories about launching against the (very different) reality. It's insightful and(I'm ashamed to admit) sometimes humorous when Dan followed traditional advice and failed miserably because of it.

I'm currently launching my own new startup and shall be following Dans advice closely as it encourages a business that's low-risk, fun and flexible.

PROS

- Readable in under 2 hours. I consider this a great trait when ultimately we want to read less and get straight to work.
- Loved learning about Dan's own experiences, it makes him very approachable and human
- Well organized with clear layout
- A fun casual tone made reading it easy and pleasurable
- As macabre as it sounds I actually really enjoyed reading about his failures - I could relate to them and felt reassured that he offered solutions to these real-world issues.
- Loved the contrarian ideas
- Really got a lot out of the info about validation - I'm considering a pre-launch for my own startup and this book convinced me to do things differently. This single piece of advice was truly invaluable.

CONS

- Section about Wordpress wasn't so great but if you need more information it's very easy to find complimentary free courses online
- Some of the tables in the book need rotating (in the PDF version) in order to read them.
