Just wow. So this exists.

I was surfing the AOL on my interweb apple today, and got lost on an interpage called "The Goggles". I guess it's a searching page. Who knows? These internets get harder and harder to use every day. I'm so glad someone finally put all of the internets into a book, where us normal folk can understand it! From what I understand, they'll make a new book every year, so it will always be current! I don't know why we even bother with the internets! I can't imagine the maker of the internets can update it that often, so the book will probably replace the internets soon! The WorldwideWebs are a passing fad.

A great book for net-novices who aren't computer-illiterates

The first book I ever read about the internet. I got this book way back in '92 (or perhaps the spring of '93). It was one of only two books that were out (at least that people knew about on the net), the other one being The Hitchikers Guide to the Internet, or something like that. I still have the old copy, so I can't vouch for the newest releases, but since the author is the same, I trust his text has only improved. It was a great book to start out learning about the net because it didn't just skim the surface, but got into the nitty gritty of many different aspects, including email, ftp, the web (then in its infancy), usenet news, telnet, WAIS, GOPHER, and even connecting your computer to the net (not an easy task in 1992!), and more, all in just 350 or so pages! It was enough to get me hooked and to make all the cryptic unix commands that you had to deal with if you were connecting via a university (not many other choices back then) seem a little less cryptic. If you are a relative newcomer to the net, this book is a great place to start, unless you are very computer-illiterate, in which case you'll probably have an easier time with a Dummies book which doesn't go into as much detail. Even for those who are not so new to the net, Kroll has a good deal of historical information about the net and some stuff on the actual network systems that connect everything - the mbones and all that - so you will gain a lot from this as well. All in all, a very useful book!

Seller was dishonest.

Was really upset when I received this book, the seller described it as the instructors manual it was not, and I didn’t want to spend the money to ship it back, it was a heavy book. As for the book itself it’s excellent for secondary school students in art, I would highly recommend it.

This book is crap-tacular!

If my sock drawer was organized like this book...there would never be a matching pair of socks. The old socks and the new socks would cling together in a wad of static electricity, making it painful to dare try and pull them apart and match them up in any other way. The book lacks fabric softener, and reading it is itchy torture.

But seriously...this book tries to be "smart" by organizing the chapters into "subjects for art",and it doesn't work.

It's stupid!

This is an excellent book for young teens. I am a thirty year old college student who read this in a class on Native American Fiction and I loved it! It's a coming of age tale of romance and teen angst with the threat of a vampire who turns out to be a really great guy. Terrific read! Drew Hayden Taylor is also a hilarious person! Look him up!

This is the fifth book I bought of Drew's work and just WOW!!! extremely engaging and just so much fun reading. If you haven't read any of his books before you have to just buy one and you'll be hooked!

Industry has Evolved Far Past This Book

I suggest you check out the outsourcing books that have come out since this one was published as outsourcing changes quickly and this one is dated and routine.

Already, better information is obtainable on current outsourcing blogs.

That happens with books though. If they are not re-released frequently and the subject matter is evolving, they fall behind as this book has done.

This book has been on my shelf for about a year and I was dismayed to learn as another reviewer mentioned before me, that the author is a for-profit consulting firm's owner who openly (verified on his site) charges outsourcing vendors to be listed in an "Outsourcing 100" listing an "application fee" of several hundred dollars and he will assure list placement if you pay him $10,000!!!!!

Sadly, its bad form and very unbiased but that is how the world turns.

The styles and intentions of Business-focused authors versus Academic-focused authors are very easy to spot. This is no exception.

Be prepared...You're being pumped to buy consulting, not make your own intelligent solutions.

On the positive side, you'll think about where you might have holes in your outsourcing strategy.

Dearborn needs to Get Back on Track with its Authors

At best, Corbett has furnished a compilation and one-off set of the business journal articles of two & three YEARS ago.

Perhaps if it was 2002 or 2003 and you were looking for a primer, it was the book to get - but now there are too many other great outsourcing books to choose from. Like others, I don't like to add books in my library that aren't useful and this is one from which nothing new is to be learned if you are the least bit savvy about outsourcing...sort of a "Outsourcing For Dummies" with the woven twist that others have also mentioned...over-the-top and unabashed plugs for Corbett's business units.

I understand how a book author often writes a book to promote himself as an expert, academic/educator or sharer or information. But Corbett is a consultant - pure and simple - and he pushes the book at self-promotional "conferences" he puts on at great cost to attendees and corporate sponsors. Like an Amway of Outsourcing...Its a shame that the editors at his publishers (Dearborn) would print his firm's brochure and charge me to purchase it... instead of a book of business executive education - but Dearborn is getting a reputation for doing just that more and more - anything for a buck, I guess. Be warned.

On the positive side, if you can get a used or discount copy of the book, its a satisfactory first read on outsourcing if you can get past the self-promotion and by remembering that many smart people have done on their own very successfully that which Corbett insists only a consultant can do.

VIEVEE FRANCIS is author of Horse in the Dark (2012), winner of the Cave Canem Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize. Her work has appeared in various journals and anthologies, including Best American Poetry 2010 and Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology of Contemporary African American Poetry. She was the recipient of the 2009 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award and the 2010 Kresge Artist Fellowship. A Cave Canem Fellow, she is currently an associate editor for Callaloo.

Provocative

IIn Forest Primeval, Vievee Francis provokes what feels like an intimate conversation with the reader or as a commentary on the book jacket puts it “a sacred conversation with the reader, wrestling with the distressing angel for all of us and demanding a blessing.” There’s such honesty in these poems, a willingness to be direct and risky around matters of the heart, including revenge or resentment: "When you left, I went to your swan's coop, / snapped every slender neck / in the lot." The speaker seems always in quest of truth driven by a curiosity about what drives her and what is actually going on, and a willingness to challenge her own assumptions. The lyricism of so many lines stand out (“like a sorrow of banjoes”), along with the evocative use of fairy tales and myth to address questions of male-female relationships, beauty, and modern living. The internal Dantesque explorations remind me of Frank Gaspar’s poetry; the precise clarity of thought and expression coming from deep wounding, of Louise Gl�ck’s; and the artful, provocative use of essential questions, of Mary Oliver:

“…Those with love will have it.
Those without will go without. Did you think it would be
otherwise?”

and,

“ …What kind of girl are you?
The kind who wants to live, I said, and I did want to
until I didn’t anymore. But I wanted the leaving
to be on my terms, so I hit my father back.”

and,

“From the window I considered the fall, but
I was so pleased to be alive, to realize I now had you,
if only briefly, all to myself. Dear blade,
so what the truncated future? It is the licks I know

Beautiful, haunting and not afraid of the ugly making ...

Vievee Francis is one of the most exciting poets I've discovered within the last year. Beautiful, haunting and not afraid of the ugly making her words cut twice as deep. Most poets will spend years trying to replicate a work such as Forest Primeval and never come close to its incandescent, transcendent nature.The rhythm is both as blunt as a sharp point of a cliff and at other times it stops dead in its track to call attention to a small and intricate detail otherwise ignored. It is the perfect observation of the intense joys and sadness or loneliness of an artistic dreamer life and of the life of a woman in general. I am proud to call Vievee Francis a fellow woman and feminist. This book is so well worth the purchase. An absolute hidden gem. I promise you will not be disappointed.

This is a fantastic piece of work from Vievee Francis!. In Forest Primeval, she covers difficult emotional terrain regarding race, gender, image, and the and the author's personal biography that extends from the rural farm life of Texas to the cold concrete of Chicago and on to the woods of North Carolina. The poet's visceral use of image and stunning insight will make you wince as you turn the page to the next poem, and the next, and the next...
